Nigel Howard Clough is a retired footballer from England. He was born in 1966 in Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, England. After graduation from Nottingham Forest he joined the senior squad in 1984 and became a regular player in 1986/87. He helped the team to win two League Cup titles and two Full Members Cups. All in all he featured in 403 matches and scored 131 goals. In 1993, Clough left Forest for Liverpool where he played until January 1996, when he switched to Manchester City for a fee of £1.5m. From there he was loaned to Nottingham Forest and to Sheffield Wednesday, where he made only one appearance.
Clough earned 15 caps representing the England U21 team, he featured in 14 matches for the senior team and made three appearances for England B team.
In 1998, he took over as player-manager at Burton Albion, where he worked until 2009, making his last appearance on the field in October 2008. In January 2009, Clough was appointed the manager of Derby County. At the beginning of his managerial work at the club he bought nine players and moved fourteen. When 13 key players recovered from injuries a certain improvement was noticed, the team was placed 4 positions higher than the previous season. The following seasons the results were inconsistent. Nevertheless Clough prolonged his contract with the club until the summer of 2015 but was still sacked in September 2013.
