Óscar Washington Tabárez Silva, a retired Uruguayan football player, currently guides the Uruguayan national team.
He was born in 1947 in Montevideo and started his playing career with Sud America, then played for Sportivo Italiano (Argentina), Montevideo Wanderers, Fénix, Puebla (Mexico) and Bella Vista.
Tabárez retired when he was 32 and in a year he took up coaching Bella Vista. In 1983 El Maestro was appointed the Uruguay U20 head coach, after whom he guided several football clubs. In 1987 he headed Peñarol and that year Peñarol won the Copa Libertadores.
From 1988 till 1990 he coached the Uruguayan national team and led them to the 1990 FIFA World Cup finals.
Then Tabárez headed Boca Juniors (Argentina), in 1994 he moved to Italy and brought Cagliari Calcio to Serie A. After that he coached A.C. Milan and Oviedo. In 1998 he returned to Cagliari Calcio, then headed Vélez Sársfield and Boca in Argentina.
After that Tabárez had a break for four years and in 2006 he was appointed as the head coach of the Uruguay national team and brought the team to the 2007 Copa America which they finished fourth.
In the 2010 World Cup championship Uruguay finished fourth which was their greatest achievement in forty years.
Under his guidance the team won the 2011 Copa America.
Tabárez headed the Uruguay U23 team before the 2012 Olympic Games.
Having returned the Uruguay national team to power, today he is considered to be one of the best tacticians in the world.
