Sergio Apraham Markarián was born in 1944 in Montevideo, Uruguay. He played football until 17 years and has never been a professional football player.
Sergio Markarián entered the university and took up a job in Uruguayan fuel distribution company. But when Uruguay defeated to Holland in the 1974 FIFA World Cup, he followed calling and returned to football.
Markarian started his coaching the Reserves of Club Atlético Bella Vista in 1974, though it wasn’t his professional start. He started professional managerial career in 1983, when he headed Paraguayan club Olimpia Asunción. In that year and then in 1985 Olimpia won Paraguayan League Champion title.
The next club he took charge of was Club Sol de América which finished runner-up in the Paraguayan league in 1989. Then followed Cerro Porteño and in 1992 Markarian headed the Paraguay U-23 National Team. Since 1993 he coached Universitario de Deportes and they became the 1993 Peruvian League Champion. Under Markarián’s guidance Sporting Cristal won the 1996 Peruvian League.
Sergio Markarián moved to Greece in 1998 to coach Ionikos and led them to 1998/99 UEFA Cup qualification. In 1999 he headed the Paraguay national team, which he brought to the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification. In 2002 he went back to Greece where he headed Panathinaikos.
In 2002 Panathinaikos reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League and in 2003 they reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup. The season 2004/05 he spent with Greek Iraklis.
In 2005 Markarián returned to Paraguay and headed Libertad till 2007. Under his guidance the team won two Paraguayan League titles. The next clubs he joined were Mexican Cruz Azul, Universidad de Chile and Danubio.
In July 2010 he was appointed the head coach of the Peruvian national football team and guided the team for three years.
