The Afghanistan Football Federation was founded in 1922 and joined FIFA in 1948. The national football team made its international debut in 1941 in a 0-0 draw against Iran. Throughout its history the team had intervals caused by the situation in the country, so between 1984 and 2002 they didn’t play any internationals. At the Olympic Games Afghanistan participated only once, in 1948.
The SAFF Gold Cup in 2003 was the first tournament Afghanistan took part in after the end of Taliban regime. The following year they made their first step in the qualifying campaign for the AFC Asian Cup, they debuted in qualification for the 2006 World Cup, in 2005 the team competed in South Asian Football Federation Gold Cup. In 2006 Afghanistan competed in the AFC Challenge Cup.
In 2011 the team managed to finish runner-up in SAFF Championship. In the semifinal of the tournament they overcame Nepal 1-0 and in the final lost at India.
