The Algeria national football team represents the country since 1962 when the team defeated Morocco with the difference in two scores. Today Algeria is on the 35th position in the FIFA World Rankings which proves rather stable performance of an African team. The team is nicknamed ‘Fennec Foxes’ or ‘The Greens’. The team’s first participation in the African Cup of Nations was in 1968 when it finished in the group stage. Since that year the squad takes part in that championship on a regular basis and in 1990 managed to win the tournament, defeating Nigeria.
Algeria’s tried to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 1970 and the first three attempts were not fruitful. In the 1982 World Cup the team reached the group stage in Spain but failed to make it to the next round. The team played at the global tournament in 1986 and 2010 as well.
The team’s best result in the Afro-Asian Cup of Nations, which was held regularly from 1985 till 1997, came in 1991.
A Bosnian, Vahid Halilhodzic is the team’s Head Coach and Madjid Bougherra is the captain. Lakhdar Belloumi has the most caps (135) and Abdelhafid Tasfaout is the top scorer (35).
