The Angola national football team made its major breakthrough is the 2006 World Cup, when the team finished third in its group. The team, nicknamed the Sable Antelopes, was knocked out after one defeat and two draws behind Mexico and Portugal.
Angola appeared in four African Cup of Nations Cup championships and hosted the 2010 Nations Cup where they reached the quarter final after being defeated 0-1 by eventual finalists Ghana.
Angola won three COSAFA Cups in 1999, 2001, 2004.
The team is coached by Gustavo Ferrin. Their most record goal scorer is retired Akwa, who was the captain.
