The Armenia national football team is controlled by the Football Federation of Armenia and has the 55th position in the FIFA World Rankings.
The Armenian team history begins on October 14, 1992 when the team played its first game with Moldova 0-0 in Yerevan. Armenia has been participating in the qualification rounds for Euro and World Cup tournaments since 1996.
Under Ian Porterfield’s guidance the team met with runaway success. Armenia made a good performance and played a series of worthy games in a row, defeating Kazakhstan 2-1, Poland 1-0 and tied up with Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo. But then a tragedy happened as Ian Porterfield died of cancer.
The team’s best result came in Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, when it finished third in its group behind Russia and the Republic of Ireland. Armenia stood a chance to reach the play-offs but lost the game to Ireland. Roman Berezovsky was sent off by mistake. In spite of that fact Armenia scored 22 goals while Russia and Ireland scored 17 and 15 respectively.
