The Bangladesh national football team was formed when the country gained independence from Pakistan in 1971. Their international debut, recognized as an official one, came in 1973. That was a 2-2 draw against Thailand.
In 1980 Bangladesh managed to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup at the expense of Quatar and Afghanistan. That was their first and so far the only successful qualification to the AFC Asian Cup, though they were eliminated at the group stage.
In 1985 they made their first step to qualify for the World Cup, but failed. In 2006 the team reached the quarterfinal of AFC Challenge Cup. The biggest achievement of Bangladesh at SAFF Championship was the champion’s title in 2003. In 1999 and 2005 they were runners-up.
Bangabandhu National Stadium is the national team’s home ground. It has a capacity of 36,000.
