The Football Federation of Belarus was included in FIFA in 1992 and joined UEFA one year later.
The Belarus national football team started to play in internationals in 1994. Norway was the team’s first opponent in Euro 1996 qualifying campaign when Belarus lost 0-1, but nevertheless achieved good result in beating such strong opponent as the Netherlands.
In the 1998 World Cup qualifying campaign Belarus showed its worst performance finishing last in the group. The situation has been little better in European Championships since the team’s debut in 1996. In 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign Belarus was close to leave the group but failed to defeat Wales and finished third in the group thus missing the finals. Further major championships weren’t successful and the squad has never reached the finals so far.
In 2012 the squad participated in the Olympic Games in London.
Today the country is headed by Heorhiy Kandratsyew and is ranked 77th in the FIFA World Rankings.
