The Bolivia national football team qualified for the World Cup championships three times, in 1930, 1950 and 1994, but they never passed the group stage. It is extremely difficult for the team to reach the World Cup Championship because of such opponents in their neighborhood as Argentina and Brazil. In spite of this fact Bolivia is not considered to be a weak team. The team scored victory in the Copa America in 1963. The next success in the South American Championship was achieved in 1997 when they finished runners-up. Bolivia played in the Copa America 23 times in total. One more achievement is the team’s success in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
In 2010 during the World Cup qualifiers Bolivia smashed Argentina by a head 6-1, then they defeated Brazil 2-1 at home stadium.
Today they have the 83rd position in the FIFA World Rankings, though the team had the 18th position in July, 1997.
Attention should be drawn to Bolivian home stadium in La Paz. Estadio Hernando Siles is situated on the altitude over 3,600 meters above sea level. Bolivian footballers got permission to play at this stadium but in general such altitude level is banned be the FIFA. Many guest footballers say that they feel under the weather playing in those altitudes.
