For a long time the Colombian national football team hasn’t played in international games. Its first game was in 1938 and their first international tournament, the Copa America in 1945, wasn’t a success. The team finished fifth among nine participants.
Colombia wasn’t considered to be a strong opponent but the team was able to qualify for 1962 World Cup in Chile. Unfortunately, in the years to come the team couldn’t show the same result.
The year of 1975 was of paramount importance for Colombia as the squad managed to finish runners-up in the Copa America, losing to powerful Paraguay.
The year of 1987 was fruitful and Colombia obtained the third place in 1987 Copa America. Those were the times of the golden generation of Colombian players performing for the team, when a strong skeleton was formed. In 1990, during the spell of Francisco Maturano, the squad played in the World Cup in Italy and made it to 1/8 finals.
The national team met remarkable success winning the Copa America in 2001 held in Colombia.
The most notable players of the team are Carlos Valderrama, Ivan Cordoba, Leonel Alvarez, Arnoldo Iguaran, Faustino Asprilla and others.
