In spite of the fact that England is considered to be the home country of football, its national football team took part in the World Cup for the first time in 1950 in Brazil and was not able to pass the first round. Until the year of 1966 the squad didn’t perform well and only twice, in 1954 and 1962, it was able to reach quarterfinals. But in 1966 playing at home they left no chances to their opponents. Ever since the team, having strong footballers, has not managed to perform well in international tournaments and only managed to reach quarterfinals several times.
The best team’s results at European Championship came in 1968 and 1996, when they managed to win bronze medals.
Peter Shilton is the leader in the number of games played (125). Sir Bobby Charlton scored the largest number of goals.
