In association football Ethiopia is represented by the Ethiopia national team which is mastered by the Ethiopian Football Federation.
The country has rich football history as it was among early innovators of international competition in Africa. It established its own football federation as early as 1943 and got a first taste of international action in a fine 5-0 win over French Somaliland in 1947. The national team affiliated to FIFA in 1953, and became the member of CAF in 1957. By the way, Ethiopia was one of the tree sides, apart from Sudan and Egypt, who took part in the Africa Cup of Nations opening in 1957, finishing runners-up then. Overall, the team had 10 appearances in the top African tournament bearing the palm in 1962. The squad enjoyed even better fortune in CECAFA Cup competitions as it won the trophy four times (in 1987, 2001, 2004 and 2005).
The Walya Antelopes, as they are nicknamed among fans, were integral to success when they thrashed French Somaliland 10-2 in May 1954, their biggest victory ever. They went down the drain after powerhouse Iraq sank Ethiopia 0-13 in August 1992.
As of September 2012, the Ethiopia national team has the 114th position in the FIFA World ranking.
