The Guinea-Bissau national team represents this African country on the international scene. It is controlled by the Federação de Futebol da Guiné-Bissau founded in 1974. The team affiliated to CAF and FIFA in 1986.
The national squad played their first international match against British Gambia as part of Portuguese Guinea in June 1952. A football minnow, Guinea-Bissau has never qualified either for the Africa Nations Cup or for the FIFA World Cup finals. They made their biggest breakthrough when they finished as runners-up in the Amilcar Cabral Cup in 1983 losing 0-3 to Senegal in the final. The team suffered their biggest 1-6 defeat to Mali in 1997. They celebrated their best scoring 7-2 win over Benin in 2001.
The highest position the team reached was the 115th position in 1994.
