The Haiti national football team, nicknamed Les Grenadiers, is known as one of the most quarrelsome. The team’s colors are blue and red and the first kit they wear is blue with red sleeve and vice versa for the second one. Israel Blake Cantero guides the team.
During 78 years the team qualified for the World Cup eight times and appeared in the finals only in 1974. Haiti won CONCACAF Championship twice in 1957 and 1973 having participated in it for fifteen times. Twice Haiti played in Round 1 in 2000 and 2007 and reached the quarterfinal in 2002 and 2009. In the years of 1971 and later in 1977 the team finished third.
The squad’s biggest win was scored in 2000 when they played with the Bahamas Islands and the team suffered its biggest defeat in the match with Poland, 0-7, in 1974 and Bolivia, 2-9, in 2000.
Among the team’s best footballers is Emmanuel Sanon, who later guided the squad for one season but proved himself as one of the team’s best head coaches. He has 100 caps and scored 47 goals during the period from 1970 till 1974. Golman Pierre is the top scorer of the current call-up (23).
In 1974 Ernst Jean Joseph got caught using doping, that the first incident connected with performance-enhancing drugs in the World Cup history. After that match lost to Italy 1-3 the Haiti national team was disqualified for some time.
