History and achievements
The Hong Kong national football team represents Hong Kong on the international arena. It is controlled by the Hong Kong Football Association founded in 1909. The team affiliated to FIFA and AFC in 1954. Most recently, in 2002, it became the member of East Asian Football Federation.
The Hong Kong team introduced itself to the world football in 1949 when it made its debut against South Korea. It celebrated the first 4-0 victory against the same South Korea in 1953. The team has qualified for the Asian Cup thrice. In 1956, they celebrated the third-place finish as the hosts. However, Hong Kong has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup.
The team made its biggest breakthrough in 2009 when they made a shock win in the East Asian Games tournament beating Japan in the finals. Hong Kong also recorded the 2010 and 2011 Long Teng Cup victories. It celebrated its biggest match victory ever in a game against China which ended with 15-0 scoring.
