The Liechtenstein national team was affiliated to FIFA and UEFA associations in 1974. The Liechtenstein Football Association (LFV) itself was formed in 1934 and controls the national squad of the country.
The team holds its training at their home Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz which can host about 4000 people. As Liechtenstein is sparse in number of clubs representing it – only about 10 of them, the country doesn’t have its own national league and all the clubs form part of the Swiss League lower divisions. The only football competition held in the country since 1946 is the Liechtenstein Football Cup. FC Vaduz is the most titled club which won the Liechtenstein Cup trophy 40 times.
The team made its unofficial debut in a 1-1 draw against Malta in 1981. It played its first official game two years later, which was a 0-1 defeat to Switzerland. Liechtenstein’s biggest breakthrough was its splendid 4-0 win over another pocket country Luxembourg in October 2004. The squad suffered its biggest failure in a 1-11 defeat to Macedonia in 1996.
The Liechtenstein national team has big respect for its legend and best scorer ever Mario Frick who netted 16 goals in 106 caps for the squad.
