The Mali national football team is nicknamed ‘The Eagles’ and has the 40th position in the FIFA World Ranking. The team hasn’t made a good showing either in African Nations Cup or the World Cup. Up to the year 2000 the team hadn’t played in the qualifiers for the World Cup and that was their only World Cup championship. The team participated in 2004 Olympic Games in Greece.
Mali appeared in the Africa Cup of Nations for seven times. 1972 was the year when the team finished runner-up and in 2012 Mali obtained the third position.
An interesting fact about the team is that in 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, being down 0-4 on the 78th minute of the match against Angola Mali managed to tie it up for a 4-4 draw.
Patrice Carteron guides the team, Cedric Kante is the captain.
