The Mozambique national team represents the country in association football. It is governed by the Federação Moçambicana de Futebol wich was founded in 1976. The team was integrated into African football family in 1978 and became a FIFA member in 1980. Mozambique is deemed to be a strong African side though the team never had enough craft and proficiency to qualify for a FIFA World Cup. Alternatively, they’ve made 4 appearances in the African Cup of Nations, debuting in a decent 3-0 win over Mauritius in 1986.
In 2012, the team was drawn in Group C for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying along with Zambia, Libya and Comoros. But it failed to advance further finishing third with 7 points. The Mozambican squad took part in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying and even broke into the Second Round, drawn in one pool with Zimbabwe, Guinea and giant Egypt but finished underdog again having only 1 point thanks to the lacklustre draw against Zimbabwe.
The Mozambique national team is proud of its top scorer ever Tico-Tico, now aged 39, who was a fantastic asset for his country with at least 32 goals. Moreover, Mozambique gives immense credit to Mozambican-born Portuguese forward Eusébio and skillful Portuguese defender of Mozambican decent Abel Xavier.
