The Namibia national team is quite a young team on the international arena. Its governing body, the Namibia Football Association, was established only in 1990 and affiliated to FIFA and CAF in 1992. Nevertheless, the team made its international debut in a 0-1 defeat to Angola in May 1989, though it bore the name of South-West Africa then.
Namibia has never shown enough craft and proficiency to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. However, it appeared twice in the Africa Cup of Nations (in 1998 and 2008) but got the boot after the first round in both cases. The team met success in the COSAFA Cup tournament, becoming a runner-up twice (in 1997 and 1999).
It’s a tidbit that Egypt became a nemesis for the Namibians as they brought two biggest defeats to the team throughout all its existence. Thus, Egypt sank Namibia 7-1 in 1996 and thrashed it 8-2 in 2001.
In September 2012, Namibia had the 115th position in the FIFA ranking. It managed to make it 68th in November 1998.
