The Oman national football team is governed by the Oman Football Association and the Asian Football Confederation. The team made its debut in 1965 playing with Sudan and the football association was established in 2005.
At the beginning of the 21st century the team has improved its performance. In 2004 and 2007 they qualified for the Asian Cup.
In the Gulf Cup of Nations championship Oman met little success for a long period of time being 6th or 7th, but the situation changed. In the 2004 and 2007 Gulf Cup of Nations they finished runners-up and won the championship in 2009.
Hani Al-Dhabit is the top scorer. In 2001 he was awarded as the World Top Scorer.
