History and achievements
The Peru national football team started to participate in international football tournaments in 1930s. It was one of those teams that played in the first 1930 World Cup in Uruguay. Today the team is ranked 32nd in the FIFA World Rankings and has two unofficial nicknames: Incas, due its remote ancestors, and La blanquirroja (The White and Red), due to the color of its uniform. Peru claimed the The Copa America twice, in 1939 and 1975.
The team played in the 1930 World Cup for the first time but didn’t show good results. Its major achievements in the World Cup tournaments were made in 1970 and 1978 in Mexico, when Peru played in quarterfinals.
The squad was a success, being in the top three in the Copa America tournaments five times (in 1927, 1935, 1949, 1955 and 2011) and becoming six-fold winner in the Bolivarian Games. The observers say that the team’s level of performance has increased lately and assume that in the nearest future the team is likely to become a strong opponent in international football.
The Uruguaian Sergio Markarian is the team’s head coach and Teofilo Cubillas has been the top scorer for 31 years already with 26 goals. Roberto Palacios has the most caps (117).
