The Philippines national football team is one of the oldest in Asia, though it has never qualified for the World Cup or the Asian Cup.
In September 2006 the Philippines dropped on the 195th position in the FIFA World Rankings, their lowest ever position. Having improved their results during the 2007 ASEAN Football Championship qualification, the team went up to the 171th position.
It was decided not to enter the qualifying campaign for the 2006 and later the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
In the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup they reached the knockout stage.
In December 2010 the Philippines reached the semifinals of the ASEAN Football Championship.
In 2011 the national team qualified for the AFC Challenge Cup for the first time and in March 2012 the Philippines finished third in that tournament.
The team has been guided by Michael Weiß, a German football manager since 2011.
