The Portugal national football team has always been considered one of the strongest football teams in the World. It is in the eighth place in FIFA rankings.
What makes the team is that many footballers play in leading European club championships. Besides, Portuguese footballers are good at dribbling and can swap positions easily. But it should be mentioned, that Portugal football team hasn’t won any international championship yet.
In 1966 Portugal took part in the World Cup for the first time and managed to reach semifinals but couldn’t beat England, the champion, and won bronze. In 2006 in Germany Portugal football team finished fourth.
Portugal managed to make significant breakthroughs at European Championships thrice. The team managed to reach semifinal in 1984 in France and in 2000 in Belgium and Netherlands, and in 2004 it lost the final to the Greece national football team.
Paulo Bento is the head coach today. Luis Figo and Pauleta should be marked out among team’s record-holders. Figo played 127 games and forward Pauleta netted 47 goals. The captain is Cristiano Ronaldo, he proved himself to be a good player in club matches as well as on the international arena.
