The Senegal national football team is controlled by the Federation Senegalaise de Football. Today it is one of the strongest teams on the African Continent. It has qualified for the World Cup championship for seven times and finally succeeded to play in 2002 World Cup in Japan/South Korea. There the squad beat France, Euro 2000 champion, 1-0 to everyone’s surprise. After that the team played a draw with Denmark 1-1 and Uruguay 3-3 and secured the knockout stage. In the round of 16 the squad defeated Sweden 2-1 and reached the quarterfinal where it lost to Turkey in extra time. Cameroon had been the only African country to reach the quarterfinal before and Senegal succeeded in their very first participation in the World Cup.
The team’s most notable achievements in the Africa Cup of Nations were done in 1992, 1994 and in 2000 when they reached the quarterfinals. But then the year of 2002 came out ‘a golden’ one. The team played a goalless draw with Cameroon, the reigning champion, in the African Cup of Nations final, after that it was beaten on penalties 3-2 and as a result finished second. After those tournaments the best team players were bought by European top clubs.
