The Sri Lanka national football team was named the Ceylon national football team before 1972 as Sri Lanka was Ceylon. The team has never qualified for the AFC Asian Cup or the World Cup. Their debut was in 1952, it was a 0-2 loss against the national team of India.
In 1995 the team won the SAFF Championship, in 2008 they finished that tournament third and in 2009 reaching the semifinal, they were fourth. In 2006 Sri Lanka was runner-up at the AFC Challenge Cup.
