The Venezuela national football team represents Venezuela in international football and Federacion Venezolana de Futbol takes control over the team. Historically the Venezuela national football team is one of the unpromising teams in South America. It has never qualified for the World Cup championships. According to the FIFA World Rankings Venezuela has the 47th position.
A certain progress in the quality of playing has started since 2000s when sports became more popular among people in the country. That was a good impact on football and the team has no longer been in the bottom in regional matches. The 2007 Copa America was held in Venezuela for the first time and the team made it out of the group but lost to Uruguay in quarterfinal. Venezuela finished sixth.
In the 2011 Copa America the team reached semifinal where it lost to Paraguay on penalties. The best recognized match in that championship was the game with Peru for the third place, although the team was defeated 1-4 and finished fourth.
