Arsenal target Athletic Amorebieta

Daily Mirror reports that Arsenal are seriously considering the possibility of bringing Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta to the Emirates stadium.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has focused attention on highly-rated Amorebieta in a bid to strengthen his leaky defense. The lapses in the defense have proved to be too costly for the Gunners this season as they can miss out on the top-four finish for the first time in 15 seasons, without mentioning that it seems like they will be left without silverware for the eighth successive season.

Amorebieta’s agent confirmed Arsenal representatives have opened the talks with the 27-year-old centre-back over a possible move to the Emirates stadium. The Venezuelian is believed to be keen on leaving his club in summer and he would certainly be interested in making a switch to top Premier League side.

However free-spending Anzhi are also said to be closely monitoring situation. Amorebieta’s agent said: “We have had some contacts with Anzhi, they were ready to make a good offer, but my client wants to play in England, so the transfer to Russia was not possible. We are in talks with Arsenal, he could join them in June.”
