Atletico Madrid crowned Copa del Rey champions after beating Real Madrid 2-1
Atletico Madrid broke the 14-year hoodoo and outplayed bitter rivals Real Madrid 2-1 at Santiago Bernabeu in a turbulent Copa del Rey final which saw red cards for both Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho.
Ronaldo got Real Madrid off to a flying start with a fine header in the 14th minute only to see his effort canceled out by Diego Costa with an excellent shot from Falcao’s pass right before the half-time whistle. Real dominated possession and could have won the game in normal time, but Ozil, Benzema and Ronaldo hit the woodwork on three occasions. The Meringues saw their evening turn sour, as Mourinho was shown red card for arguing with referees before Miranda gave Atleti the lead in extra time. With Real desperately trying to avoid the defeat, it was Thibaut Courtois who produced two marvelous saves to deny opposition’s attackers. The things went from bad to worse for Real Madrid when Ronaldo was given his marching orders for a bizarre foul on Gabri. The latter has also been sent off by referee in the dying stages of the game, but it was surely too late to help Los Blancos.
Atletico Madrid secured their first win over Real Madrid since 1999 to lift Copa del Rey trophy for the 10th time in their history.
