Champions League results: Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Malaga. Miraculous comeback earns Dortmund semi-final spot.
Borussia Dortmund scored twice in an injury time to battle to a sensational 3-2 victory over resilient Malaga in a thrilling second leg of their Champions league quarter-final at Westfalenstadion.
Borussia Dortmund were considered sure-fire favorites to secure the victory against Malaga at the home ground, after the scoreless draw in Spain. However the German giants struggled to find a way through the massed ranks of Malaga defenders. Reus and Goetze wasted several decent chances in the opening 30 minutes, while Malaga’s Joaquin managed to catch the hosts on a counter-attack with a low shot from just outside of the area in the 25th minute.
Lewandowski leveled the scoring 15 minutes later after a sublime backheel pass from Reus. 1-1 stalemate meant Malaga will go through on away goal, and Dortmund were desperately trying to score a match-winning goal.
Malaga were carved open a number of times, but despite the ability of Dortmund to create chances, they struggled to put them away. Jurgen Klopp’s side looked dead and buried after Eliseu scored goal with a simple finish in the 82th minute, however goals from Reus and Santana deep into injury time helped Dortmund to a victory.
That was an incredible comeback from Germans which reminded the 1998-1999 Champions League final, when Sheringham and Solskjaer sank Bayern Munich. All in all Dortmund along with Real Madrid have deservedly qualified for Champions League semi-finals. Malaga would be certainly disappointed with the way their dream debut Champions League campaign has ended, especially taking into account that the players have to overcome the psychological trauma of heavy La Liga defeat against Real Sociedad, an aircraft scare and the death of Pellegrini’s father in their build-up for the match.
