Confederations’ Cup results: Pirlo and Balotelli help Italy overcome Mexico

Italy battled to a hard-fought victory over Mexico in their Confederations’ Cup opening game courtesy of Pirlo’s marvelous free-kick and Balotelli’s late goal.

Juventus veteran midfielder has broken the deadlock with a fine free-kick over the wall and into Mexico goal, with goalkeeper left stranded. Man Utd forward Javier Hernandez scored an equalizer from the penalty spot, after Barzagli brought down Dos Santos in the penalty area in what could have been qualified as a professional foul by the referee. However Barzagli was fortunate to avoid red card. And yet it was Milan bad boy Balotelli who had a final say with 12 minutes remaining, as he outmuscled Mexico defender before sending the ball past Corona.

The victory allowed Italy move level on points with Brazil, though they are trailing the leaders on goals difference.
