Confederations Cup results: Villa nets three and Torres four, as Spain dismantle brave Tahiti 10-0 (video highlights)
David Villa nets hat-trick, Fernando Torres scores four, as Spain tear minnows Tahiti to pieces 10-0.
Though pundits predicted reigning World and European champions to reach double figures against amateur opposition, Spain narrowly led 1-0 by the half-hour mark courtesy of Torres’ goal. However Spain’s over motivated strikers David Villa and Fernando Torres, who cannot boast of impressive goal scoring record at the club level, moved in to help their side setting a new record winning scoreline of the tournament, which equaled Tahiti’s heaviest ever defeat against New Zealand in 2004.
Tahiti managed to keep dominating Spain at bay for some time however the floodgates began to open as they tired after half an hour. Torres has broken the deadlock in the 5th minute, and scored in 33rd, 57th and 78th minutes, David Villa completed his hat trick by 64th minute with the other two goals being netted in the 39th and 49th minutes, David Silva scored a brace (31, 89), while Juan Mata also added his name on the scoresheet in the 66th minute.
The result allowed Spain to continue their march towards the semi-final, after they beat Uruguay 2-1 in their opening game of the tournament.
