England defeats Italy in the friendly 2-1
Italy started superbly and De Rossi netted the ball 15 minutes after the start of the match. Yet the runner-ups of the Euro 2012 did not lead long, as 12 minutes later Phil Jagielka headed the ball. The game cooled down towards the end but Tottenham forward Defoe had his own thoughts about the end result, scoring a brilliant goal and granting England victory in the match.
After the game Roy Hodgson claimed he gave young players a chance to show themselves and ‘they answered the challenge in the best possible way.’ The head coach praised England debutant Tom Cleverley for his first appearance in the national team, stating: ‘We know he’s a good player and he’s a very, very important player for Man United.’
