Europe League results: Tottenham 2-2 Basel
Tottenham managed to fight back from two goals down to grab a 2-2 draw with Basel in their Europa League quarter-finals first leg at White Hart Lane.
Basel scored two goals within four minutes with Stocker tucking away the rebound after Streller hit the post in the 30th minute and Frei heading home from the corner in the 34th minute. Adebayor pulled one back with a volley from Parker’s cross five minutes before the half- time. Sigurdsson leveled the scoring with an excellent drive in the 59th minute.
Tottenham suffered a major blow as their talismanic winger Gareth Bale left the pitch on a stretcher after picking up an injury in the dying stages of the game. Tottenham also face the threat of losing Lennon, Gallas with the decisive Premier League clashes yet to come.
The Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas revealed he is impressed with Basel. He said: “I think we limited the damage to give us the possibility of still getting through. Within all the negatives, there is the positive of still being in the tie and going away from home to try and get through.”
“It wasn’t a bad result, everyone has great belief we can go through. This Basle team was probably the best team I have ever seen at White Hart Lane. All the recognition goes to a top opponent who we had to play here tonight,” he added.
