Ferdinand set to sign a new contract with Man Utd next week

Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand is currently in contract negotiations with his club and is widely expected to sign a new deal next week.

The 34-year-old Ferdinand, who has spent over a decade at Old Trafford, has not yet agreed an extension on his deal that is due to expire in summer.

Ferdinand has won his sixth Premier League title with the Red Devils last week. He declared the decision to retire from international football on Wednesday with a view to concentrate on club’s duties.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who decided to leave Manchester United at the end of the season, said: I think it is something he could have done last year. Ending his international career will definitely help him, as it did with Paul Scholes, and hopefully Manchester United will get the benefit of that.”
