Former Man Utd Stars Looking For New Homes

Free agents can be a huge help to any club looking to improve their squad without any outlay, although big wages can be a big problem when it comes to making any move. Sometimes these players’ wage demands can leave even the best players without a place to call home for some time, and that is the case with the players listed below.

Two Former United Free Agents

Given the trials and tribulations of Manchester United this season, it is perhaps surprising that two of their former players find themselves on the free-agent list. Anyone having a bet on football will tell you that The Red Devils are a long way from their thoughts this season, so should have these players been allowed to leave Old Trafford in recent times?

David de Gea

Once considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in world football, it is a big surprise that the Spaniard is still without a club. A fan favourite at United during his time at the club, the former Atletico Madrid stopper made over 500 appearances, winning a Premier League and two FA Cups.

Still only 33, de Gea left United in the summer after his contract ran out, with Erik ten Hag instead turning to Andre Onana to fill the void between the posts. The latter has endured a mixed start to his career at the club, leaving fans wondering just why de Gea wasn’t offered a new contract.

At his age, the Spanish international is still young for a goalkeeper, and he still has plenty to offer at the highest level. There are reports linking de Gea with numerous clubs, and it surely won’t be long until someone acquires his services.

Jesse Lingard

Having scored 6 goals in 32 appearances for England, it seems incredible that former United star, Jesse Lingard remains without a club in 2023/24. Once one of the most in-form players in the Premier League, Lingard was also allowed to have his contract run down at Old Trafford during the summer of 2022.

The now 31-year-old was coming off the back of a hugely successful loan spell at West Ham before becoming a free agent, leaving a long list of teams looking to bring him in on a free transfer.

Lingard was accused of being more interested in money than finding the right club during this period, and his decision to join newly promoted, Nottingham Forest was met with surprise by fans. He signed a lucrative contract at Forest, but having failed to score in just 17 appearances at the City Ground, he was released at the end of the season.

There have been rumours that he might make a move to France in an attempt to resurrect his career, but for now, the former United man remains without a club.

De Gea and Lingard are just two players who continue to look for new clubs as the season trundles on, and although it may be a risk to sign players of this nature, both of these former Man Utd players should still have plenty to offer to any potential suitors.
