La Liga results: Atletico Madrid 1-2 Real Madrid and other matches

Atletico Madrid’s woeful record against Real Madrid continued with a 2-1 defeat in derby at the Vicent Calderon.

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho fielded a weakened side with one eye on the Champions League semi-final second leg against Borussia Dortmund: Cristiano Ronaldo was sidelined due to injury, while Nacho, Carvalho, Arbeloa and Essien were fulfilling defending duties.

Falcao got off Atletico Madrid to a flying start with a close-range header after Lopez’s mistake two minutes into the opening half. Real Madrid leveled the game by courtesy of Di Maria’s free-kick, deflected off Juanfran 8 minutes later. Di Maria gave his side a lead with a low finish from Benzema’s pass in the 63rd minute of the game.

The result means Real Madrid came five points clear of third-placed Atletico, trailing the leaders Barcelona by 11 points. Atletico are unable to secure a victory over cross-town rivals for more than 14 years.

Elsewhere Barcelona were held to a 2-2 draw by resilient Athletic Bilbao at San Mames, while Real Sociedad outplayed their closest rivals Valencia 4-2, to put themselves into the driving position to reach the Champions League spot.
