Luis Suarez returns to action as Manchester United restore dignity in the Capital One Cup

David Moyes has replaced all but two players that were humbled by Manchester City on Sunday and it bore fruits as United got a narrow win over bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. Most of the squad have played their first competitive matches in a long time as Rafael, Jones returned from injuries while Kagawa, Buttner, Evans, Nani, Chicharito had a chance to prove they are worth more than being bench-warmers. Brendan Rogers fielded the strongest set of players. The only goal from Chicharito seconds into the second half proved enough for the Red Devils to make it to the next round while Liverpool can concentrate on the Premier League.

Arsenal youngsters overcame West Bromwich in penalty shoot-out while last year champions Swansea City were well-beaten by a second-tier Birmingham City.

Manchester United 1-0 Liverpool
Newcastle United 2-0 Leeds United
Tranmere Rovers 0-2 Stoke City
Birmingham City 3-1 Swansea City
West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Arsenal (3-4 on penalties)
