Olympiakos claims the 40th Greek title
The Piraeus-based side clinched the trophy on the 88th anniversary of the club’s founding.
Olympiakos defeated AEK Athens on Sunday and with five games to go secured their 40th Super League victory. The win in the derby gave the team a 16-point lead at the top of the standings.
Sunday game was watched by the packed Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium. Defender Avraam Papadopoulos netted a double for the hosts and winger Djamel Abdoun scored the third one ensuring the side competitors Asteras Tripolis cannot reach the team at the top.
Olympiakos head coach Michel, who was put in charge of the team in February, expressed his content after winning with the trophy yet urged the team to continue winning into the final few games of the league season.
“I feel very happy and satisfied. I want to thank Olympiakos for hiring me and giving me the chance to win this title,” claimed the manager.
“Now we want to win the final five mathces left until the end of the campaign, because this is the best way to prepare the side for next year. The players are well aware of the significanse of this, and to see some of the things we can organize for the future,” underlined Michel.
