Premier League results: Chelsea cemented top-four standing after a 1-0 win over Man Utd

Juan Mata’s deflected shot in the dying stages of the game allowed Chelsea to sink newly crowned Premier League champions Man Utd by 1-0 and edge closer to Champions League qualification.

The game was largely lackluster and it looked as if two sides were heading to a goalless draw until Mata saw his strike deflected from Jones’ and sneak past goalkeeper in the 87th minute. Things went from bad to worse for United as Rafael was shown direct red card for kicking David Luiz.

The result saw Chelsea move to a third place, one point ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal with a game in hand, and three points ahead of Tottenham who they face Wednesday at Stamford Bridge.

Elsewhere, Liverpool were held by Everton to a scoreless draw in the Merseyside derby, while Tottenham outplayed Southampton 1-0 by courtesy of Bale’s maginificent late goal. Everton are currently on course of finishing ahead their cross-town rivals for the second season in a row. Tottenham retain chances of finishing in the Champions League zone.
