Premier League results: Sunderland destroy Newcastle in Tyne and Wear derby
Sunderland’s chances of retaining top-flight status this season have received a major boost after an astonishing 3-0 demolition of Newcastle in Tyne and Wear derby. The Black Cats have recorded their first victory over their arch rivals at St’ James Park in three years and the biggest one in 34 years, since a 4-1 win in 1979.
Ahead of the derby media discussed the eccentricity and political views of Sunderland’s new boss Paolo Di Canio, while pundits questioned the ability of the Italian to save the Black Cats from the relegation this season. The result of the game demonstrated former West Ham player has what it takes to inspire his players to deliver excellent performance. As it turned out, Sunderland players have necessary skill and quality to outplay the injury-plagued Newcastle side although almost on one believed it could be possible ahead of the clash.
With Newcastle fans chanting “We’ve got Collocini, you’ve got Mussolini” Sunderland hit the ground running and opened the scoring after 27 minutes by courtesy of Sessegnon’s goal. Adam Johnson extended the Black Cats’ lead with a curling shot in the 74th minute. Vaughan rounded off visitor’s victory with an excellent half-volley with eight minutes to go.
The result saw Sunderland leapfrogging to the 15th position three points clear of relegation zone, while Newcastle remain in the 13th spot.
The game was marred by some violent scenes from Newcastle fans both in the stands and outside the stadium, which resulted in 43 arrests by municipal police.
