UEFA Champions League results: Day 1
The main favorites celebrated comfortable victories on the night but it was Real Madrid who surprised most with a 6-1 thrashing of Galatasaray in Istanbul.

Wayne Rooney had a commanding performance scoring twice and assisting Antonio Valencia. Robie van Persie added another goal as David Moyes clinches his first ever win in the Champions League. Real Sociedad did not find arguments against experienced Shakhtar Donetsk and lost at home.

Real Madrid humiliated the hosts at Turk Telekom Arena netting six goals. Isco opened the scoring in the 33th minute, Karim Benzema added a brace and Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick completed the party. Umut Bulut’s goal was hardly any consolation for Turkish fans. Juventus were held to a draw in Copenhagen despite dominating in the match.

Benfica downed Anderlecht at Estadio da Luz courtesy of Luisao and Djuricic goals. Thiago Motta scored twice to help PSG beat Olympiakos in Greece. Cavani and Marquinhos added two goals to complete hammering. Vladimir Weiss scored a masterpiece consolation goal.

Group D
David Alaba, Mario Mandzukic and Arjen Robben scored for Bayern Munich against CSKA Moscow as the holders started title defence comfortably. Manchester City beat Viktoria Plzen courtesy of Edin Dzeko, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero strikes.
