World Cup qualification results: South America. Chile 2-0 Uruguay and other matches
Struggling Chile secured the much-needed 2-0 win over the table neighbors Uruguay, to leapfrog them into the fourth place of CONMEBOL 2014 World Cup qualifying tournament.
Estebal Paredes, who has been called up to the Chile squad to replace suspended Alexis Sanchez, scored the opening goal in the 10th minute. Eduardo Vargas has been doubtful for a game after suffering an injury during Chile’s 1-0 defeat against Peru. However he managed to shake off his injury to feature in the crucial clash against Uruguay and score a goal in the 78th minute, which has put the game beyond doubt.
The result saw Chile moving to a fourth place with 15 points from 11 games, nine points behind the leaders Argentina (who were held to an eyebrow-raising 1-1 draw by Bolivia) and two points ahead of Uruguay.
It is to be recalled that top four CONMEBOL teams progress to the World Cup final stages, while the fifth-placed team goes into an intercontinental playoff.
Here are other CONMEBOL resuluts:
Bolivia 1-1 Argentina
Ecuador 4-1 Paraguay
Venezuela 1-0 Colombia
