Alexandre Song Billong began his career in 2003 in the Bastia youth team and made his appearance for the main team a year later. In August 2004 Alex came as a substitute in the 86th minute of the match against RC Strasbourg, which Bastia eventually won 2-1. Song played 34 games for the club that season, including 31 matches in Ligue 2.
Song’s performance drew the attention of many European clubs like Internazionale, Middlesbrough, Manchester United and Lyon. However, Arsenal head coach Arsène Wenger was so impressed by the footballer that invited him on a pre-season training in Austria. Alex made his debut for the team in September 2005 in the match against Everton. Billong made a sub appearance in the 86th minute and Arsenal won 2-0.
Alex’s European debut came in November 2005 in the match against FC Thun, where he came as a substitute on the 57th minute of a 1-0 victory.
In January 2007 Song was sent on loan to Charlton Athletic and made his first appearance for the team on 10 February 2007 in a 2-0 loss to Manchester United. Alex played 12 matches for the temporary club and went back to ‘The Gunners’.
