Asier Riesgo

Asier Riesgo Unamuno is a Spanish goalkeeper who plays for CA Osasuna.

Asier received his football education at Real Sociedad and signed his first professional contract with this Basque team however he made his professional debut on loan at Eibar in the Segunda division. Asier performed for Eibar during 1.5 years until he was called back from loan in 2004 provoked by the injury of the main keeper Sander Westerveld. His top flight debut took part in game when the Basque side encountered Deportivo Alavés at the very end of the season on 19th May 2004.

In the summer of 2004 Westerveld left the club and Riesgo became Real’s main keeper. However in the season 2006/07 he had to compete with the newly-signed Claudio Bravo who eventually became the first-choice goalie. Riesgo on the bench, Real Sociedad got relegated.

In 2007/08 Riesgo played all the 42 games in the Segunda nevertheless the club failed to get back their top-division status. Riesgo was sent on loan to Recreativo where he became an undisputed started almost at once. In his first season he saved 2 penalties on January 4, 2009 thus gaining a 3-1 victory at Numancia and became the first goalie to stop a penalty shot from Lionel Messi. Nevertheless appearing in all the 38 league games Riesgo couldn’t save his side from eventual relegation.

In December of 2009 Asier was one of the contenders for becoming a possible substitution for Carlo Cudicini at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League as the Italian fell out for a season because of a motorcycle incident. On his return to the Basque side Asier suddenly found himself as a third-choice. He played only one game following a serious injury of Claudio Bravo and a disqualification of Zubikarai in a game against Córdoba. He made seven appearances totaling 630 minutes and his side resumed their first-division status after a three-year absence.

On June 18, 2010 Riesgo signed a three-year deal with Osasuna where he made 1 appearance in 2 seasons.
