Birkir Bjarnason was born in Akureyri, Iceland, in 1988. He began his professional playing career at Viking in 2006 after graduating from Figgjo. He played for Viking until 2011 and in 2008 had a loan stay at Bodø/Glimt. Bjarnason helped Viking to finish third in 2007.
In January 2012 he moved to Belgium signing for Standard Liège but hadn’t made an appearance for the team and left it for the Italian side Pescara on in July 2012. After the club’s relegation from Serie A Bjarnason switched for Sampdoria.
Birkir Bjarnason is an Iceland international. He was a part of the U17, U19 and U21 teams. Since 2010 he’s been called up to represent the senior team.
