Nuno Miguel Pereira Sousa, also known as Briguel, was born on 8 March 1979 in Portugal. His nickname derives from the name of the legendary German footballer Hans-Peter Briegel.
In 2000 Briguel started his professional career when he signed a contract with the Portuguese club Marítimo where he had been trained at the youth academy. The young defender began playing with the reserve team scoring twice in 51 matches. During this period the player was training very hard. Many footballers struggled for getting into the starting eleven, that’s why Briguel had to face stiff competition with more experienced players. However that didn’t break his team spirit and after a while he began to earn a place in the starting line-up. During twelve years with Marítimo Briguel managed to cement a starting XI position. He took part in more than 200 games overall kicking 2 goals.
From 2001 to 2002 Briguel gained 5 caps for the Portugal U-21 football team.
