Per Ciljan Skjelbred is a professional footballer of Norwegian origin who is under contract with Hamburger SV. He was born on June 16, 1987 in Trondheim, Norway.
He started out at local football club Trygg/Lade. Skjelbred was chosen to take part in a football talent competition on TV. He won the competition and immediately received an offer from Liverpool to join the club`s youth academy. But the player declined the contract and pledged his future to the Norwegian giants Rosenborg Ballklub. On May 22, 2005 he became the youngest player ever in the Norwegian Premier League who was shown the red card. Skjelbred quickly found his way into the first team and became a regular for Rosenborg, clocking up over 150 appearances and scoring 9 goals. In the summer of 2008 Newcastle United started chasing the Norwegian midfielder and even prepared a bid for him. But on the final day of the transfer window the manager of the Magpies dismissed interest in Skjelbred. Per continued playing for Rosenborg and it was in 2011 that he managed to change his registration.
In 2011 HSV announced that they had completed the signing of Per Skjelbred. His contract runs until June 30, 2015. Soon Skjelbred suffered a serious injury. After recovering he was loaned to Hertha Berlin.
The midfielder has defended the colours of all Norway national youth teams so far. On March 28, 2007 Skjelbred debuted for the Norway national football team.
