David Aouate (aka Dudu) is a goalkeeper plying for RCD Mallorca and the Israeli national team.
His engagement in football happened at Maccabi Haifa. David expressed his desire to play for the main squad but the coach couldn’t guarantee a firm first-eleven place there for him. This pushed David to move to a second-division Hapoel Haifa. Right after his move the club won promotion to Israel’s highest division and the goalkeeper himself was called up to the national team of Israel.
David returned to Maccabi Haifa in 2001 as a replacement for their injured main keeper. Aouate became the first choice automatically and won the League in 2002. After such a success they qualified for the Champions League group stage – first ever for Israeli football. Eventually they took the third place but managed to beat the powerful Manchester United during the campaign.
Aouate’s quality play attracted attention of many European clubs but eventually he was transferred to Racing de Santader to save the Spanish side from relegation in 2004.
In 2006 David signed for Deportivo de la Coruña. The keeper spent an outstanding first season for the club earning a respectful 8th position on Don Balón’s player of the year list. However in the following season there emerged an obstacle for David’s getting into the starting eleven as the club purchased a Uruguayan Gustavo Munua. After a fistfight between the two goalkeepers in the training session the management of Deportivo decided to restrain both the goalies from main squad. However Aouate was returned to the starting eleven facing the team’s uninspiring league position very near to the bottom of the table. After Aouate’s return not only did he save the side from relegation zone but helped them reach their top seven place permitting ‘Depor’ to play in UEFA Cup qualifiers. Regardless a series of well-played games Aouate wasn’t in the manager’s plans for the seasons and refused to stay in the club.
David signed for RCD Mallorca positioned 19th in January of 2009 but owing to the keeper and good defensive play the team from the Balearic Isles managed to finish in the top 10. Since 2009 Aouate spent 124 games for Mallorca.
Aouate’s international career started in 1999. Since then he was capped to his national team 64 times.
