Édgar Barreto is a Paraguayan midfielder who currently plays for Italian Serie A club Palermo. He was born on 15 July 1984 in the Paraguayan capital-city Asunción.
Édgar started out his senior career with hometown club Cerro Porteño in 2002. In his first professional 2002/03 season, Barreto shaped well with his scoring 4 goals in 26 games for the team.
Soon the Dutch scouts set sights on a promising Paraguayan footballer, and in 2004 Édgar Barreto moved to Europe to join top-flight side NEC in the Dutch Eredivisie. With his consistently good club performances he shortly became a regular of the first team. Overall, Barreto scored 10 goals in 95 appearances for NEC during his three-year spell at the club.
In 2007, Italian side Reggina bought out his contract from NEC for a transfer fee of €2 million. A young midfielder was the main hope for the club as he played to the full capacity to keep the team in the top tier. For two years, he made a total of 68 games and 5 goals for the Italian club.
After Regina suffered a relegation to Serie B in 2009, Édgar Barreto moved to Atalanta where he was mostly deployed as a backup player.
In 2011, a Paraguayan footballer was signed by Palermo for an outstanding fee of €5.3 million.
Édgar Barreto enjoyed good fortune at the international level. He featured for the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship, the 2007 Copa América, the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups. A highly promising Paraguayan international, he announced his retiring from the Paraguay national team in 2012, amassing 60 appearances and 3 goals for 8 years in the squad.
